Commonwealth Games - Rugby Sevens

@machpants Yeah. I was only disagreeing with Tim's initial assertion about who would make the team.
Trael Joass was in initially a XVs player in the Mako$ squad who couldn't make the starting XV. It's possible that miraculously he's among the 12 best sevens players in the country, but I'm inclined to think that's because almost everyone who has the chance focuses on XVs.

Even if you included XVs players then Damien McKenzie and Rieko Ioane would probably be the only certainties.
What?
There's no-one in that sevens squad who is in the top 150 rugby players in NZ.
Trael Joass isn't a first choice starter for the Mako$ and Knewstubb doesn't even make last season's squad.
What you've just said makes no sense at all... Unless you're talking about the Mako$ Sevens squad.
Seriously - you think Knewstubb is making the NZ Sevens team if Beauden Barrett decides to focus on sevens?
Joass is pushing out SBW?
What are you on about? SBW wasn't great at Sevens even when he mildly concentrated on it. Is Barrett playing Sevens? Show me how good he is at Sevens and I'll make a decision between him and Knewstubb.
This seems to be entering into one of those twilight zone internet discussions - in my opinion of course.
In my view - the best 150 rugby players in NZ get selected for Super rugby. Then Sevens gets a bit of a pick, but there's quite a few who opt to play NPC. And once those guys are out of the selection pool Sevens gets to choose from the rest.
If we chose from our best players we would have bigger, faster, more skilful players.
That's my point.
Looks to me like the best 150 XVs players get selected to play super rugby...
Where is the proof these players are better Sevens players?
Everyone is in the same boat. All nations except Fiji prioritise 15s over 7s. Our best available 7s players just have to be better than everyone else's.
Exactly.

Is there to be a replay of the 7s finals on tv1?
Can't see one, maybe it'll come up on On Demand online later?
Sky would play it over and over. TVNZ clearly not concerned about maximising return on investment by providing extensive coverage

I'd say a pretty sizeable chunk of NZs best atheletes play rugby. However those atheletes wouldn't go well in other sports because they have conditioned themselves for rugby, and that's what they practice full time.
IIRC all of the 15s players that wanted to play 7s at the Olympics had to spend a year reconditioning themselves and getting used to 7s or else they would be largely ineffectual. Turned out some (like SBW) were just that despite their best efforts.
The point being 7s is pretty much a different sport now that it is professional. At least as different as test cricket is to T20s anyway. Specialists from each are no guarentee to be the best at both.
It's likely that if you put that 7s team up against the best 15s players in a match tomorrow the 7s team would win.

After the low of Rio 2016 this is a fabulous day for 7s

Makes it all the more sweet. I'm sorry I wasn't able to watch but as usual the TSF collaborative commentary was excellent 👍

Here's one for you Stargazer, who is reffing the mens final? Without SA being involved the chances of Rasta being appointed look disturbingly high.
Actually I thought Rasta was amazingly balanced in our semi.

Portia is crazy good, Blyde is awesome for a smaller looking woman.
Been a couple of shitty headlines over the weekend about the women, not naming them but was SBWs sister this and so and so's partner instead of who they are.
Is funny seeing those manicured painted nails setting to bind at scrumtime.
I got the Aidan Ross's partner deal though

Not sure if YRC?
SBW made the team, but got injured in the pool play. The Ioane bros and Pulu also made the squad.
Ardie dropped out when his AB aspirations appeared.
Messam tried but didn't make the squad.
