@Nepia they're a "restricted" version of android but using the Amazon appstore. So you get Netflix, Amazon video, I've got Plex on it too. Can't get the download for Netflix to work properly though but mainly because I've been too lazy to try and fix it.
I'll check out other e-readers and let you know.

I just use a mini ipad. Great size for both reading and watching stuff.
Most of the 'issues' people are talking about are because, as you know, apple stuff works best in an apple environment. It seems to be that trying to mix it in causes frustration because you are trying to get it to do something it was designed to do very well a certain way but not the way you are trying to integrate it.
eg want to watch/listen to something stored on your computer? Home sharing deals with that, streams over your network from one device to another. Want to access your passwords? Sure keychain does that and links via iCloud.
I guess all you need to think about @Nepia is how you are looking to get your media. With an ipad f you want hard copies on your tablet be prepared to pay extra for capacity and also have to either download directly (and pay) via itunes on the device or convert downloaded stuff on your computer and transfer it via an itunes sync. For Amazon/Netflix/iPlayer etc you will have no trouble streaming or downloading directly. VPNs also work fine
If you use an iMac at home I would definitely go with an iPad. You could even look at a second hand one to save a few bucks. -

@Nepia Stand folds up into the table case I think?
I was more meaning the rounded bit - my OCD might not be able to cope with holding one side on the rounded bit and the other side on the flat.
I think I've ruled out the Fire due to screen size - it appears 7" is the largest screen available in Oz.

Nope. I accept the limits are by design but the software limits are a valid complaint even in an all apple environment

What software limits are you referring to? Just curious.

Ahh ok, think the latest one here is 8" and you can maybe get larger sizes in the HD and/or HDX? Happy to send over with the added BAT.

I guess you are talking about using them as a laptop substitute (which I agree is silly even if Apple are pushing the Pro in that direction). The are/were designed primarily as a multi-media/ browsing device that use apps to provide a platform.
For files I have no problem with accessing anything I may need in a hurry via GoogleDrive, OneDrive, iCloud rather than store on the device. -
iOS file management & networking. Itβs limited (deliberately) compared to other osβs. Apple has views about how to do things and steer users toward toward their own apps which happen to have poor/inconsistent interfaces.
You can work around it, but it is still valid criticism. In general, great hardware with middling core software.

Adblocker: I have been using Adblock Plus for ages now. It's very effective. If there is a downside, then maybe that it slows down loading pages a little bit, but that may be the case with every adblocker.
It's available for iOS, Android, Chrome, Firefox, Opera, Internet Explorer, Microsoft Edge and Safari.Try uBlock Origin, it's less resource intensive.

@antipodean yeah I think that's what I use on the laptop on Chrome.
Barely notice it is there, except now and then I click on a legit link and it blocks it.
I also use the VPN extension, but I find that seems to slow my internet speeds down..

Can I join in and ask a question too please?
I want to get some sort of tablet, but for two main reasons only - to read on and to watch stuff when travelling on a plane.
I don't need the most high tech, or the most expensive (in fact I'm leaning against that because I'm not a tablet person around the house kind of guy).
Any suggestions?
As an android/ pc guy I'd say the ipads and minis are very good. If you want a tablet with expandable memory then the Samsung galaxy tab is better. I go for minis or 8" androids, a little small but easy for the kids to use
No kids for me to worry about!
I'm probably wanting closer to 10" as I'll be watching stuff on it, but then not too big because I want to be able to read it as well.
The wife has a big iPad. The display is very sharp
One of the Pros? I find them to be comically large (and I'm too cheap/unwilling to pay over $1k for a tablet).
I guess I should have said tablets less than $500.00
This is what I've got 200 of the store owners from work using:
https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/TABSAM5800/Samsung-Galaxy-TAB-A-101-WiFi-Tablet--White---16GB
Decent price point if you just need WiFi and not a SIM card for your connectivity. Big enough to read ebooks from (same size as iPad mini)
I've got the 8" model, perfectly adequate for video and general browsing, so if a bigger screen is required, have no doubt the 10" model would perform well enough.

Why are you posting your porn star application letter on this thread?
